Abundance

Develop systems that are designed around solving the problems of abundance.

through Design, human innovation is moving quickly to create a world of abundance.

Scarcity is already being eliminated by innovation and technology, but our social systems and we as individuals are not prepared for the new reality.

“Humanity is now entering a period of radical transformation in which technology has the potential to significantly raise the basic standards of living for every man, woman and child on the planet. Within a generation, we will be able to provide goods and services, once reserved for the wealthy few, to any and all who need them.” — Peter H. Diamandis, Abundance

  • Our current world systems are all pretty much designed around solving the problems of scarcity: the idea that there isn’t enough to go around. The systems were designed to manage the difficult questions of who gets to survive in a world where there are only enough resources for a relative few.

  • But technology is moving us away from scarcity toward a world of abundance. We now live in a world with abundant information available through the internet, abundant communication with people around the world, abundant food (though distribution is still and issue in many parts of the world), and we’re quickly moving toward having abundant energy supplies, water supplies, inexpensive and effective healthcare, and more.

  • It’s important to know that we’ve had the ability to create abundance for quite a while. In 1963, Buckminster Fuller made a proposal to the American Institute of Architects for what he called the World Design Science Decade, which indicated that the transition could be achieved in ten years. In 1975, appearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, he had this to say: “I can state and prove that it is technically feasible to take care of all of humanity at higher standards of living than any have ever experienced and do so by 1985…” Of course, that didn’t happen, so we want to be aware of the forces that might want to keep the status quo.

  • We need to develop systems that are designed around solving the problems of abundance.

  • Abundance meditation: “what is abundant in my life?”

Therefore:

Work to move us toward more abundance using one or more strategy: 1) do more with less; 2) use less; 3) decentralize the manufacturing of artifacts.
