Local Commonships

Act locally as part of groups applying global ideas to local problems and conditions.

improving the world through Design can be done at several scales; generalized designs can be developed as Open Artifacts projects, but ultimately the world won’t change until those designs are built locally.

When your focus is global, it’s not always easy to see how you can best act locally or find the resources you need; you need a local group to act locally.

  • In a world where you can create communities of people spread around the world, this is about local connection and local action. There is a real need for face to face interactions, and for people who are committed to the success of their local community.

  • Local commonships would be groups of people dedicated to working toward creating a better world through design and embracing complexity. In essence, they are Commonships of the Future focused on the future of a local region, city, or neighborhood.

  • I don’t necessarily think of this group as being as small as a functional group like Evolutionary Design Teams, but small functional groups could come together temporarily to tackle specific local problems. If, for example, you were to say that the Rebel Wisdom community was what Csikszentmihalyi referred to as the “Fellowship of the Future,” then local commonships would be like local Rebel Wisdom communities, grouped by physical location so they could act within that local region, city or neighborhood.

  • I think that the small functional groups coming out of the Local Commonships would be tied to Open Artifacts projects, pulling down information and contributing improvements based on their experience.

Therefore:

Assemble and participate in local groups of world creators charged with applying the principles and lessons shared within global commonships to local problems and conditions.

Work with Evolutionary Design Teams to find and improve Open Artifacts projects
