Creation Realm

Find all the places where you love to create, and enfold them into your creation realm.

creating things takes time and effort—World Creators—and so we need to find Time to Create and safe places to do it.

Traditional workspaces stifle creativity. As our mood, energy level and tasks change throughout the day, we must be allowed to freely move between different kinds of places where we can do our best work. Doing all our creative work in one location limits us and lessens our creativity.

When I’m thinking, drawing or writing, where I do it is important. Sometimes I need to get away from all distractions and be alone in a quiet room, but there are times when I need to be walking a trail or sitting in a busy public space. In college, I lived in a dingy little basement apartment that was good for sleeping, but not working. I began to see that I had places that I could go where it was easier to study, and I began thinking of my “home” as being a collection of spaces: my apartment, my desk at the design studio at school, my favorite sandwich place (that didn’t care if I sat at a table for a long time), the library, and even the bike paths and trails that I walked to get around town.

If you look at your own situation, you may think of places that you like to go, but don’t always think about in the moment. Sometimes, just moving from my office to the bedroom gives me a new perspective. If I need to spread out, maybe I take over the dining room table. Or I’ll leave the house and hang out at nearby coffee shop that has a good wifi connection. With my phone and physical notebook, I no longer need to be home to write or at least brainstorm ideas.

Remember that creation takes many forms, and make sure you include any of the local communities that you’re involved in, like your church (or non-christian equivalent), a book club, community choir, orchestra or band, gaming club, or any places you volunteer your time. These are places where you can create through direct interactions with others in your community.

Also, consider places that you don’t currently go, but might work well for you. A nearby public library can be a great place, or maybe there’s a recreation or community center with public sitting areas or even a craft studio you can use. Public places, in general, are great places to find a corner and sit. No one will care if you hang around. A favorite bench at a nearby park might be a great place to write or sketch. Even malls have little sitting areas that you can hang out in.

Places you may want to consider might include a nearby trail or favorite neighborhood path, a crafts or pottery studio, a favorite cafe, a co-working space, a basement studio, an office in your home, your garage, the bath or shower, a dance studio, or a fitness gym to name a few.

Therefore:

Consider all the places you can go to create your life, and draw a map showing your creation realm. Try to connect each place with walking paths and keep them relatively close to each other.

Activity can affect your state of mind, and your ability to think—Thought Flow—so consider places you can Walk, draw, or quietly write— [[ Writing To Learn ]]; also consider places that stimulate your senses— [[ Sensory Playground ]]—as a way to inspire yourself
