Yours To Do

Choose something that you can do, that needs doing, and that you care about, then do it.

in a cyclical process like a Creative Practice, it’s important that you’re challenged enough that you grow during each cycle, but you don’t want to take on a challenge that is so hard that your progress stalls. This pattern examines how that balance can be achieved.

The size and scope of the problems we face is overwhelming and can easily lead to us not being able to act, simply because we don’t know where to start.

  • The world is full of big problems, and no one person can solve them all. It can be overwhelming to take on a problem that’s too big. It can also be dangerous because you run the risk of making the problem worse in your attempts to fix it.

  • Take some time to get clear on what you care about and why you care about it—Big Loves—and use that information as a guide for possible projects to which you can contribute.

  • We each have unique capabilities and those capabilities also give us a unique perspective on what needs to be done. Think carefully about what you might be able to offer that no one else can. At first, try to coordinate with others trying to solve the problem and offer what you can to aid their efforts. Over time, you’ll begin to see opportunities that no one else can see.

Therefore:

Make your best effort to find something that 1) needs doing, 2) you care about, and 3) you might be effective doing; then do it. Look for something that’s a challenge, but not too hard with the idea that you’ll learn from the experience and be capable of doing more on the next challenge.

If you’re not sure where to start, any effort made to restore the health of our home planet, Flourishing Earth, is a worthwhile endeavor
