Emotion's Source

Discern if your emotions are a response to the situation at hand or some past trauma.

emotions are one of your primary tools for Discernment. This pattern explores how to accurately hear what your emotions are telling you.

Emotions are tricky in that they can be triggered by several things: events in your past (even in the very distant past before your memories formed), intuitions about the current situation, or the current situation itself. If you misinterpret where an emotion is coming from, it can throw off your efforts to make sense of the world.

  • One of the skills of emotional intelligence is the ability to harness your emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem-solving. In order to do that, you need to understand what information the emotion is giving you.

  • Is this emotion related to what’s happening right now, or is the current situation triggering an unrelated emotion from my past? Is it reflecting the current situation and my true response to it, or is it more reflective of an unresolved situation in me that is only tangentially related?

  • It’s very similar to challenging the knowledge of your personal universe. You challenge your emotions to determine whether you should use them to help you make sense of yourself or help you make sense of the world.

  • Visualization: Visualize your emotions as a colorful stream flowing from somewhere in your personal universe. Do the emotions seem to be coming from the situation in front of you? Or do they seem to be coming to you unexpectedly from some deeper location in your personal universe?

Therefore:

When you feel a strong reaction to some situation, check in with yourself and try to discern if you’re reacting to the situation directly or if your reaction is a signal that there is some other unresolved issue you need to attend to.

If your emotions are being triggered by Intuition, then you’ll want to pay attention
