Design Initiative

Take it upon yourself to identify and solve problems through design.

we don’t need permission to walk the [[ Infinite Path ]], so once we’ve decided to take on the role of World Creators, we don’t need to wait for someone else to tell us what needs to be done.

Entrenched, finite-game systems will never hire you to make them obsolete.

“Initiative can neither be created nor delegated. It can only spring from the self-determining individual, who decides that the wisdom of others is not always better than his own.” — R. Buckminster Fuller

  • Governments and corporations are not the problem-solvers. Individuals and small groups are the ones who solve the problems; governments and corporations can play a role later and help scale the solution if that’s needed.

  • Finite games are transactional where the work to be done is chosen by those with power, then they hire people to execute their vision. That puts the drive for change in the hands of those who have incentive to keep the status quo, and that affects what gets created.

  • The infinite game is about changing the rules and expanding boundaries, and you taking the initiative on behalf of all humanity is a rule change.

  • Seth Godin describes entrepreneurship in a similar way: “You don’t apply. You don’t get a salary. No one picks you. […] Entrepreneurship is a chance to trade a solution to someone who has a problem that needs solving. Solve more problems, solve bigger problems, solve problems more widely and you’re an entrepreneur.” Entrepreneurship is design initiative in a capitalist context, but it does not need to used to generate income.

Therefore:

Take it upon yourself to recognize problems in our world, understand them, and solve them; since our primary method for solving problems is through design, this is called taking the design initiative. Rather than focus on the needs of a client, focus on the needs of the users.

By taking the design initiative, you join with a large number of people who are already busy trying to solve problems. Rather than always creating your own projects, support the work of others until you find Your Innovations. Use your participation as a means to strengthen your own skills as well as contribute—Creative Practice
