What is better
The future of humanity is still being written, and the pen is in our hands. If we want a better world, the first step is to decide what we mean by “better.”
When we define what we mean by a better world, we take the unbounded possibilities of universe and divide them into two groups: futures we’re trying to bring about and futures we’re trying to avoid.
So is it better to work to avoid something or to create something?
It’s difficult to point to one idea that describes a civilization that isn’t broken, that isn’t destroying the planet, and that isn’t hurting people.
We can approach it at a human level and say that we need more people who are strong individuals, good sensemakers, and creators with empathy and generosity. We can approach it at the community level and say that we need some kind of global community that has the power and wisdom to act to the benefit of all life. We can look at our Earth and say that we need to restore our planet’s natural systems if we hope to survive at all.
All of these perspectives are valid.
