A couple of things today. First, I wanted to create an outline of the Open Source Initiative’s website (opensource.org), as a reference for the Open Artifacts Initiative website (openartifacts.org).

Some thoughts on the initiative:

At this point, it’s not my goal to create a non-profit or corporation for the open artifacts initiative, but I’m not necessarily against it. I’m not sure what the need is, or wha tte advantage would be in creating it.

A this point, I am the only staff/volunteer, but I suppose we might find others who are interested in helping out.

I could see would in affiliation with other organizations supporting things like open science, open textbooks and so on. I should perhaps compile a short list of those organizations. (I may have already gotten a start on that.)

I guess the trademark and logo are protected & owned by the open source initiative. That might be one reason to incorporate. I think the idea is that if you want to use the OS logo or trademark, you need to meet certain standards. I’m not sure.

I might want to look at creating a membership as part of this, but I’m not sure what advantage I could offer to members.

Last night, my wife described my son as having no hope for the future. I know that he’s concerned about the world falling apart. He reads a lot about the Great Unravelling online and that is the story that makes sense to him. I feel like I need to offer a better story.

I thought about the idea of paths. Three paths that are currently more or less parallel. The Business as Usual path goes straight down the middle, with the Great Unravelling path just to the left. It is clear to most people that those two paths will merge some time in the future since ignoring the problems we face will simply lead to our destruction. Both of those paths go on some distance straight ahead, with little deviation.

The third path is the Great Turning, and true to its name, it begins to curve away from the other two paths as soon as you choose to follow it.

In this metaphor, the path is not time, although it seems to have a time aspect about it. I’m not sure what else it is, though. Is it life? If that’s the case, then the other two paths will simply end at some point, or at least become a series of small trails (trail off?). The Great Turning path will become stronger and wider over time, as our ways of living support and nurture life on our planet.

The paths could also represent how people are living on the planet. The more of us tramping down the path of Business As Usual, the more strength that gets, yet we know it leads to ruin. In that case, the Great Turning is the fabled road less travelled, but we need to turn it into a super highway.

I’m not sure what else it could be. Quality of Life? Or are the paths just leading to destinations that we can choose? Business as Usual and the Great Unraveling are headed straight for a cliff. The Great Turning turns away from that cliff and moves us toward a world where everyone survives and thrives.

In that case, the roads are just roads, and it’s the landscape that matters.
